FAQ – Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) & DECAT

What are the functions of a DPF?

Most modern vehicles are fitted with systems to reduce the vehicle’s emissions.  For diesel vehicles, these systems are known as  Diesel Particulate Filters (DPF)  while petrol cars are fitted with a Catalytic converter commonly known as CAT. DPF systems and CAT filters are used in petrol and diesel engines to reduce harmful CO2 emissions that are produced by the vehicle’s engine. Other than reducing the vehicle’s emissions the DPF or CAT system does not fulfil any other roles within the engine.

Why does a DPF / CAT fail?

In the perfect world, these systems are designed to clean themselves when the engine runs for more than 30-60 minutes. When the engine runs for a long period of time, heats builds up in the exhaust allowing the DPF filter to clean itself.  However, due to city traffic, short travel distance and dirty fuel these systems tend to get clogged up from the soot generated by exhaust gasses. Once the DPF is clogged the inner filter of can get damaged to excessive soot build up within the filter.

DPF Repair / Replace or Remove?

When these systems fail motorist will either have a choice to repair, replace or to completely remove the Diesel Particulate filter from the vehicle’s exhaust. To repair the DPF system can be very expensive as these filters are made of platinum. In some cases if the internal filters of the DPF are not damaged specialist DPF repair equipment can be used to clean the DPF out. With DPF cleaning and DPF replacement, the biggest risk to the motorist is the possibility of the DPF clogging up again. In such cases, the owner will have to carry the cost again to repair or replace the DPF. Due to the high cost of DPF repairs and replacements, motorists can often not afford to repair or to replace the DPF.

Removing the DPF from the exhaust is a low-cost permanent solution to any DPF problems that you might have. Once the DPF is removed, the vehicle will be 100% back to normal and you will never have any DPF problems again. Other benifits of DPF removal include:

  • No more limp mode
  • No more engine light problems
  • Prolonged engine life due to reduced back pressure from the
  • Up to a 10% saving in fuel cost
